Discussion Starter

Complete strangers posing as friends for portraits. As the photographer said, everyone comes away with a feeling of caring, it’s lovely.

There are a lot of voices in our lives warning us of the dangers the world brings. From childhood we are taught about stranger danger and our parents instinctively tell us to be careful 40 times per day.

And yet, Jesus points us towards a new way. Paul says in Romans 12, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.

It’s hard to sincerely love other people, much less strangers. It can feel awkward and cross cultural boundaries. But on the other side of those emotions, Paul says, we honor others above ourselves.

3 Questions

1. Would you rather be in the picture or be the photographer?
2. When was a time you had a conversation with a total stranger?
3. If the photographer stopped you on the sidewalk, would you participate?

Chew on this

Why do you think it’s so easy to talk to a brand new friend but sometimes hard to talk to your parents?
