In a recent ESPN Magazine article, big wave rider Maya Gabeira had this to say:
“The most dangerous time to be nervous is when you paddle for a wave. You have to be ahead of it and get reasonable speed to catch it from the right place. If you hesitate, you are late, and that’s when you get bad wipeouts.”

Whether you are riding big waves off the coast of Portugal or learning to drive you’ll need to manage your nerves to stay safe.
