April Diaz

April has pastored in the local church for 17+ years. Most recently, she was on staff at Newsong Church (Irvine, CA) where she had 6 different roles in 10 years. Prior to Newsong, she was involved in Willow Creek’s student ministries for 7 years. April is betting everything on the fact that the church exists for the next generation and has intensely developed leaders to love them. She’s been on Fuller Youth Institute’s Advisory Council since their formation. She’s an associate at the Slingshot Group in the youth ministry area, passionately connecting awesome churches and great youth workers together. April’s also a certified coach through the Center for Advanced Coaching. She speaks and writes frequently on matters of youth ministry, soul care, and leadership. Secretly, she’s a total girly girl, reads more than she can put into practice, and is still crazy about her high school sweetheart, Brian. Together, they co-parent the most beautiful Ethiopians, Judah and Addise, and bio son, Asher. Her first book, published by the Cartel,  Redefining the Role of the Youth Worker: A Manifesto of Integration is a compelling vision for the church’s role with teenagers.

Random But True Things about April Diaz

  1. I hate holding hands during group prayer because my hands are often sweaty. #insecurity
  2. I used to loathe running. I’m obsessed with it now. #halfmarathons
  3. I wanted to be the first female President of the US. Instead I’m often the only female leader/pastor in a room. #samesame
  4. Middle schoolers are my favorite people on the planet. #fact
  5. I met my hubby, Brian, when we were 17 years old. He was late to a Youth for Christ student leader meeting. My first 2 thoughts about him were: 1) he has nerve walking into this meeting 20 minutes late, and 2) damn, he’s hot! #judgmental
  6. My best friend in Kindergarten was named April. She wasn’t an imaginary friend. #BFF
  7. I have 2 tattoos: my hubby’s initials on my wedding ring finger and the Greek word for “LIFE” from John 10 on my left wrist. #forever
  8. I don’t love music, which tests my husband’s unconditional love for me. #snob
  9. One summer when I was in elementary school I had a red, white, and blue USA bathing suit. I would do swimming tricks at the pool and sincerely thought people thought I was a part of the US Olympic team. #narcissist
  10. I like to consider myself 50% Puerto Rican (because of my husband and my theology that two become one), 50% Ethiopian (because of my two oldest adopted kiddos), and 50% Korean (because of my 10 years on staff at a heavily populated Korean church). #150%
  11. I wanted to be a math teacher when I grew up. (NOTE: see previous fact and thank the Lord he redirected my path.) #truevocation
  12. We had 3 kids in 15 months. We brought home our 2 oldest from Ethiopia and got preggo with our little 9 months later (for the record: this only happens for infertile couples about 10% of the time). Asher was born 7 weeks pre-mature, which meant we had a 4 ½ year old, barely 2 year old, and newborn. One friend said we’re the most effective family builders he’d ever known. I don’t think that’s a compliment.  #crazy
  13. I’m a rabid believer in mentors and surrounding myself with wise counsel. I currently have a therapist, spiritual director, coach, and monthly peer-mentoring group. #needy
  14. I grew up snow skiing. I’ve only skied once since getting married in 2001. I blame my man. #blamegame
  15. I’m obsessed with The Bachelor(ette). I can not stop watching. “Hi, my name is April and I’m a bachelor-holic.” #powerlessness
  16. If I could live in any other country in the world, I’d live in Ethiopia. Brian doesn’t agree. #maritaldispute
  17. I love the beach. I hate the sand. #conflicted
  18. I’m in love with traveling, especially internationally. The only exception was the 40-hour travel time from Ethiopia with our newly adopted 2 ½ year old son and 11 month old daughter. #traumatic
  19. Unlike Adam, I applied to Moody Bible Institute twice. I got denied twice. #grace
  20. I chronically bite my fingernails. You can tell how stressed I am by what my nails look like. #compulsive
  21. I could do hair and makeup as a job. #beauty
  22. I’m unashamedly, unequivocally, passionately egalitarian. My husband is the best partner I could ask for in life. #mutual
  23. I’ve never broken a bone, had a cavity, or had stitches (unless you count my C-section). I think that makes me a superheroine. #knockonwood
  24. I’m a total girly girl and a total tomboy. I love make-up, hair product, accessories, and pretty things. My toenails are always painted. Yet I love camping, college sports, and getting messy. Once when I was in Kenya, I showered 3 times in 17 days. #showersareoverrated
  25. My parents are truly some of my favorite people on the planet. I adore them, my 2 younger brothers, and my sis-in-law. #familyfirst
