In a world which can overwhelm us at times with headlines and news stories about injustice in the world, how are Christ followers supposed to respond to it all? For some Christians, it seems that the answer to that question is to fight with our guns, our military and our laws to protect others and stand strong for what is right. Yet, for other Christians, they claim that pacifism is the right answer, which is most often (mis)understood as staying out of the conversation altogether and keeping to yourself. But what if the answer to that question is neither of those options and instead something in the middle? That’s what Viva! The Third Way discusses.
The Third Way, or nonviolent resistance, presents a path for Christ followers that is in between fight or flight and was modeled in the life and death of Jesus: he never took up arms, practiced self-defense or suggested violence as a means of protecting the poor or oppressed, and yet “passive” is probably one of the least descriptive terms you could apply to Jesus. By looking at four teachings from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, we explore the power of the Third Way.
Here is what we’ll be looking at:
Week 1: Retaliation – Matthew 5:38-42
Week 2: Love For Enemies – Matthew 5:43-48
Week 3: Forgive – Matthew 6:9-15
Week 4: Judging Others – Matthew 7:1-6
Includes 4 lessons, instructions, and two slide templates for PowerPoint, Keynote, MediaShout, ProPresenter or another display system.
