How much control do you have in your life? For many of us, having control over our lives is something that is celebrated and taught, as we strive towards independence and success later in life. Even in faith settings, we are told that control is tantamount to being a good Christian in areas of our sexuality, emotions and religious piety. Ultimately, the push to be in control can easily become one of the biggest forms of idolatry as we, often unconsciously, set ourselves as god of our own lives, as well as those around us.
As we meet Habakkuk, he is writing from Judah and watching the people around him do evil and destructive things. He’s not happy about how out of control life is within Judah and tells God as much, issuing complaints to God about how life should be different and telling God what to do. Rather than responding with rebukes, God patiently and lovingly answers Habakkuk and brings him to a place where he realizes that relinquishing control, since he never had it to begin with, is the best thing he can do.
Viva! Habakkuk will take your group through a similar journey on the issue of control. We’ll look at the importance of being honest about any emotions of frustration or anger towards God, what to do when life doesn’t go our way, the consequence of striving for control in our lives, and ultimately discuss how to let go, and let God. Here is what we’ll be discussing:
Week 1: Complaining to God (Habakkuk 1:1-11)
Week 2: Wait…What?! (Habakkuk 1:12-2:5)
Week 3: Woe to Control (Habakkuk 2:6-20)
Week 4: Let Go and Let God (Habakkuk 3:1-19)
Includes 4 lessons, instructions, and two slide templates for PowerPoint, Keynote, MediaShout, ProPresenter or another display system.
