Description

Gun control is easily one of the hottest topics being discussed in person and online today. The biggest reason for this? Outside of the fact that tragic situations continue to happen in the United States (and let’s face it, there is plenty of gun violence in other places around the rest of the world, as well), a group of teenagers have refused to let the topic fade to the background until the next school shooting happens. As your students debate this issue in classes and as they walk out of school to stand for their beliefs, is the church helping them think through this issue from a Biblical perspective? That is exactly the goal of Viva! Guns.

We will spend four weeks exploring some of the central topics in regard to the gun control debate. These materials aren’t designed to teach your teens the “right” answer, but instead to facilitate respectful conversation and to seek the Holy Spirit’s guidance on this issue through Scripture. Here is what we’ll be discussing:

Week 1: Valuing Life – Genesis 1:26-31 & 4:1-15

Week 2: Trust – Luke 18:18–30 & Psalm 20

Week 3: Self Defense – Matthew 5:38-48 & Romans 12:9-21

Week 4: Ownership – Luke 22:35-38, 47-51

If Jesus was physically alive and walking around today, would He have an AR-15 or an AK-47 strapped to His back? No. Would He shun and bully LGBTQ people (or anyone who was different)? No. Would He be all about money and greed? No. These are characteristics of the Christian church, not of Christ. Christians should be the first to stand up and protest against America’s adoration for guns, not contribute to the ridiculous debate!
