Director of Youth Ministries


Flossmoor Community Church, an active, diverse and inclusive south suburban church known for it’s outstanding Youth program, seeks an outstanding person with an understanding of how youth learn; discerning their needs and abilities, creatively interacting and engaging their involvement, inspiring their spiritual growth and most of all, having the energy and passion to make it fun!

Primary Objectives

The Director of Youth Ministries (DYM), shall assist the Pastor and guide the Board of Christian Education (BCE), lay leaders and the parents of the youth of Flossmoor Community Church in providing for the spiritual growth, Biblical education, discipleship and development of the faith of the youth of this church, ages sixth through twelfth grades.

Primary Responsibilities

Coordinate all aspects of appropriate Christian education activities for the youth of Flossmoor Community Church

Youth Groups

  • Motivate, coordinate and provide leadership for all youth.

  • Purchase and develop curriculum appropriate to each youth group that provides appropriate Biblical and spiritual education to facilitate the spiritual growth and discipleship of our youth and that is consistent with Flossmoor Community Church’s Mission Statement and Core Values.

  • Coordinate communication to all youth groups and their families.

Youth Leadership Teams (Adult Lay Advisors and Junior/Senior Peer Staffers)

  • Recruit, select, equip, train, and give support to all adult lay advisors and youth staffers (11th and 12th grades), who are responsible for the weekly leadership of the youth groups.

  • Lead weekly Leadership Meetings and provide fellowship, spiritual growth and educational opportunities.

  • Coordinate communication of the Leadership Teams.

  • Provide ongoing accountability to all Youth Leaders and Staffers.

All Youth

  • Provide and coordinate opportunities for youth of various ages to interact in fellowship and faith development.

  • Provide and coordinate outreach and mission opportunities.

  • Plan and coordinate with Director of Children’s Ministries meaningful opportunities for youth and younger children to interact with each other.

Youth Budget

  • Oversee all spending of Youth accounts, including ordering of supplies, payment of retreat fees, ordering teaching materials, etc.

Ancillary Responsibilities


  • Participate in weekly staff meetings.  Provide regular reports regarding area of Youth Ministry.

  • Work with Leadership staff to plan and vision for FCC.

  • Attend all staff retreats.

  • Attend the calendar planning session.

  • Serve on the Subcommittee for the Prevention of Sexual Abuse and Sexual Harassment.


  • Provide the church with regular communication (via bulletin, website, email blasts, The Narthex) regarding Youth Ministries activities.

Goal Setting

  • The DYM will meet with the Senior Pastor and consult with the Chair of the Board of Christian Education annually to establish measurable goals for the coming year.

Desired Gift and Knowledge Base

  • Deeply Christian, spiritually mature person with a passion for the spiritual nurturing of teenagers and adults.

  • Ability to invite, inspire and engage others in discovering and using gifts for Youth ministries.

  • Self-directing, organized, and administratively competent.

  • Effective leader, coach, facilitator, planner, problem-solver, communicator and team builder.

  • Excellent ability to delegate effectively and trust others to fulfill their responsibilities.

  • Understanding of how youth learn, discerning their needs and abilities, and providing developmentally appropriate work.

  • Ability to nurture parental responsibility for faith development of their children.

  • Determination to grow in knowledge and understanding of youth and family ministries, remaining open to new and creative ideas for spiritual nurture.

  • Technological capabilities with a computer and willingness to utilize technology to manage information and work tasks.

  • Ability to encourage youth, youth staffers, and lay advisors to have fun.  Believe that God is with them every step of the way.

Working Relationships:

The Board of Christian Education

  • The Director of Youth Ministries will serve as a resource to the BCE in setting the direction for youth ministries at Flossmoor Community Church that is consistent with the church’s Mission Statement and Core Values.

Flossmoor Community Church Staff

  • Maintain congenial working relationships and act as liaison with leadership, Administrative support, and custodial staff.

  • Consult with the Pastor regarding possibilities, plans and concerns in Youth Ministries.

Youth and Families

  • Tend to our youth and their families through personal, caring contact.

  • Act as a resource and guide for parents in their role as primary agents in raising their children to faith in Jesus Christ.

Congregation and Co-workers

  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that facilitates positive relationships with co-workers and members of the congregation and leadership.

Accountability and Review

The DYM reports to the Pastor and is accountable to the Governing Board through the Personnel Committee.  The Pastor will conduct an annual performance review with the DYM based on this job description and the agreed upon goals set by the DYM and the Pastor for the year.


  • This is a flexible three-quarter (30 hour) exempt leadership position. Medical and retirement benefits are not offered. Vacation time and holiday benefits are outlined in Employee Practices and Policy Manual and can be reviewed with the Director of Operations.

  • Regular office hours and attendance on Sundays during the program year (September-May) are expected.
