Boise First United Methodist Church, the Cathedral of the Rockies, is located in downtown Boise, Idaho. We are an inclusive community of Christians, where All Means All, with diverse backgrounds committed to creating a safe worship space through a process of welcoming, engaging, and transforming with all who join us in discipleship and ministry. After ten years of leadership our co-directors are stepping out of their roles to focus more time on their family. We believe that this is a wonderful opportunity for someone who has a heart and passion for youth and our hope is to fill this position by this coming summer either before or shortly after our current leader’s transition.
Position Overview
The Director of Youth Ministry will be responsible for developing, coordinating, and administering an effective and comprehensive ministry for youth between grades 7-12, and to their families, consistent with the COTR mission statement. This person will work closely with and report directly to the Pastor of Family Life and Children’s Ministry. This person will also work closely with lay volunteers and staff to establish a vision for the youth ministry as well as build the infrastructure necessary for a sustainable model of youth-ministry, including a commitment to the position for at least a three to five-year term.
Position Responsibilities
Vision and Leadership
Provide leadership and work collaboratively with lay volunteers, Pastor of Family Life and Children’s Ministry, youth leaders, and other staff to establish a sustainable model of youth ministry
Contribute to and collaborate with the broader church for integrated, meaningful, and intentional ways to connect the youth of COTR to the church, reminding the COTR congregation of its responsibility of spiritually forming youth
Build and train teams of adult volunteers to lead programming for youth, foster long term engagement between youth and adults. Maintain meaningful, encouraging relationships with volunteers where volunteers feel equipped and valued.
Facilitate a vision for the youth ministry working with the ministry staff and key volunteers to create a mission, and core values for the youth ministry, as well as create three-year goals in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the broader church
Relationships
Develop personal relationships with youth by creating a welcoming, fun, and inclusive culture, being a friendly and positive role model, and providing spiritual counseling as needed; also develop close ties with parents to support youth faith formation
Identify, develop, and disciple youth leaders, creating opportunities for youth to be involved in leadership roles in COTR
Track and follow up with visitors to all youth programs
Foster relationships with adults at COTR to develop a committed network of volunteers for the youth ministry
Represent COTR in the wider Christian and local community by serving on appropriate committees and community organizations
Programming
Oversee the development, planning, and implementation of comprehensive formation of youth including (but not limited to) weekly middle and high school youth group meetings, formation classes on Sunday mornings, youth Confirmation classes, small groups, and Bible study.
Initiate, implement and oversee religious curriculum development in partnership with the Pastor of Family Life and Children’s Ministry, consistent with the United Methodist Church and COTR, to meet the particular needs of youth and their families
Plan and coordinate trips and retreats, and participate in and encourage involvement in UMC youth activities and with other churches and organizations with an emphasis on community involvement
Administration
Communicate program information to youth, parents, and the church at large through a variety of media in a timely fashion, including social media, website, newsletter, calendar, etc.
Ensure that all church guidelines and policies are followed including safe sanctuary and transportation
Work with ministry leaders and staff members collaboratively to support the mission of the COTR, sharing calendaring events when possible, coordinating ministry activities. Attending all staff meetings and ministry team meetings.
In consultation with Director of Accounting create, maintain, and steward the financial resources for youth ministry and prepare an annual budget for recommendation
Ensure records for all youth and volunteers are up to date and attendance is tracked for all events in church software
Competencies
Deeply rooted in Christ and growing spirituality through personal habits and disciplines
Passionate about middle and high school students and their journeys of faith
Ability to communicate with persons of all levels of maturity and status
Excellent verbal and written communication that inspire others to participate in the work of the youth ministry
Able to work effectively and efficiently in a team environment, as well as independently, exhibiting flexibility when needed
Ability to delegate and empower staff, students and adult volunteers
Strong organizational, administrative and leadership skills
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in ministry, religion, or another related field required
Advanced degree or youth ministry training/certification preferred
Five to seven years of experience in youth ministry or Christian education preferred
Three to five years of experience in a medium or large church setting with ability to navigate dynamics of a large organizational structure preferred
Understanding and knowledge of Wesleyan theology and United Methodist faith traditions
Experience recruiting, training, coordinating, and empowering volunteers
This position is exempt, require approximately 40 hours per week including nights, weekends, and multi-day summer trips. The Director must hold a valid driver’s license and own a vehicle with insurance and a safe driving record. Employment at COTR requires a background check, completion of Safe Sanctuary training and completion of all application forms, onboarding process with HR and Executive Pastor.

Salary is commensurate on educational and practical experiences and range is $42,000-$52,000.
